Happy Mother’s Day to all the Moms out there. If you do not have children, trust me, if you follow this blog, you are a women who influences others.
Most women do not know the extent of their influence. I believe they get stuck in thinking about what they are not doing well, the negatives. Please read this post with open eyes and realize the number of people you touch every single day.
Women leaders today have come a long way. It was not that long ago, that women were not in the work force. When they did, it was in lady friendly roles, such as teachers, nurses, administrative assistants, private help, etc. These roles remind me of care takers.
Today, women make up 57.2% of the workforce in the US, according to the Department of Labor. But today, the roles they occupy are not for ladies only. Women are in every different field, from science to sports commentators to CEOs and business owners of great companies.
There are several qualities that distinguish women leaders from others. Here are a few that I’ve seen in my leadership coaching clients and others who have influenced me in my journey.
Recognize their strengths
Identify your strengths and weaknesses and then concentrate on your strengths. Do what you do best because you can always hire help for the areas you are weak in. This recognition takes self reflection and honesty. No ones expects you to be good at everything. When you focus on your strengths, this will become part of your unique leadership style as a women leader.
Invest in themselves
Investing in yourself, with both time and money, will do wonders for your career and well being. Women leaders know they need to care for their health and professional career by raising their personal bar. Having a housekeeper, monthly massage, attending professional conferences, connecting with your friends, having a coach or fresh flowers in your home will do wonders for your self-esteem and you’ll have the energy for your career.
Build a supportive network
No one person accomplished anything great by themselves and that goes for us ladies as well. Women are natural connectors and need to be with other women. Build relationship with others, that will help support you during challenging times and celebrate your success, is not just good for your career, but for your soul. Regular times for these connection is vital to every area of your life.
Great women leaders know that they need to take a risk or two to move ahead. Not all risks have to be reckless. Listen to your gut and taking a chance on trying something new is how you’ll learn about yourself and what you are made of. If you never take a risk, you’ll never accomplish anything great or learn something new.
Women leaders bring a unique blend to the world of leadership. Great women leaders know what makes them unique, they know who they are, have support and take risks. They don’t try to be like the men leaders they work amongst, but understand they are great at their unique style of leadership.
To all the women who have dared to be themselves and make a difference in this world and be a great role model for others, I thank you. Thank you for being you and never settling for anything less than your very best.
