With the new year in it’s first few days, what have you done differently? Did you make mental notes in December of the goals you wanted for yourself? Goals for the new you in the new year? Maybe they sounded something like, “I’m gonna….” or “Jan first will be the day I…..” or “I’m going to start….”[pullquote]Nothing changes, if nothing changes. –Tony Robbins[/pullquote]
Here’s what I know about goals and New Year’s Resolutions: 47% are for self-improvement, 38% are weight related and 34% are about money. What resolutions did you make? Or have you given up on making resolutions or changes in your life? You’re not alone, if you answered yes to that last question. I believe people are slowly giving up with each passing year, chipping away at their own self-confidence.
But, it doesn’t have to be that way.
Let me encourage you to do something differently: write down 3-5 things (and no more) goals or new habits you want for this new year. Now ask yourself, the people who do this or have this habit, what are they like? What are the differences in their beliefs that make this happen subconsciously? Let me use the common ‘lose weight’ goal for the new year. If you need to lose, then most likely, you don’t move as much as you should, eat foods that are either not nutritiously dense or are chemically filled, and you make excuses about your lifestyle to justify your behavior. Am I right? Well, not you, but I’m sure you know someone who is……
Let’s look at the behavior of someone who is healthy and physically fit. Most likely, and I am making a few assumptions here, they enjoy exercising, are attracted to fruits and veggies, make wise choices about their meals and snacks, and have certain beliefs or habits regarding where their exercise routine fits into their day and week.
In the blog post, 5 Apps to Achieve Your Goals and Create Habits, I mention several apps I use or have tried to stay motivated and on task with my goals and new habits.
If you don’t make a conscious effort to make any changes, then nothing will ever change. You will be as frustrated at the end of this year about yourself, career, wallet or health if you don’t get off your butt and make a change TODAY.
